Who is this reporter who says one thing but does another thing? This reporter makes sure to tell everyone in his/her industry that he/she hates accepting gifts, winning raffles, or receiving tokens since according to this reporter, it is an indirect way of bribing the media.
But in reality, this reporter accepts invitations to travel abroad to cover events (and does not even write about it), gift certificates and accept products as gifts. His/her collegues will see this reporter using a new product and will ask how he/she was able to get one – this reporter will say that it was on a loan. A loan that lasted months? Who are you kidding?
What takes the cake was when after an event, this reporter commanded the PR staff of the event to get him/her the company giveaway as he/she does not want to queue. Just recently, this reporter got another gift and is now walking around showing-off his/her new toy. People saw you waited for hours just for you to get your gift. Where is your no-to-bribe principle?
To this reporter, if you think giving gifts is a form of bribe, what do you call reporters who receive them – noble? And worst, what do you call reporters who after receiving the gift will write a “kiss-toot” article about the company / gift?
And what do you call reporters who will write bad stories because they failed to get the business-favors they’re asking and/or to force companies to give them gifts and favors? And you even dare call yourself a legitimate reporter?
The industry already know your true color. Companies are giving you gifts and favors not to bribe you but because they pity you and to silenced you. You’re the only one left who still believes you’re holy. YUCK! So you don’t have to pretend. If I were you, its either you don’t accept anything at all, or just enjoy your gifts and shut up.
You just had too many gifts and industry friends (?) that is why your secret is a secret no more.
(CLUE): If you get to read praising articles, chances are this reporter got a gift from the company. If the article is to destroy the company / product, then something bad happen between this reporter and the company.
